Draft — not legal advice. This text is a starting point adapted for a trades directory. Have it reviewed by a lawyer before publishing.
Who we are
Builder Finder UK is an online directory of trades businesses in the United Kingdom. For the personal information described in this policy, the operator of Builder Finder UK is the data controller. Operator’s legal name and address to be confirmed
You can contact us about this policy, or about your personal information, at support@builderfinderuk.co.uk.
Information we collect from visitors
You can use Builder Finder UK without an account. We do not ask for your name, email address or phone number, and the site has no forms that send us personal information.
Like most websites, our web server records each request it receives: your IP address, the details your browser sends about itself and your device, the address of the page you asked for (which includes any words you searched for) and the time. We use these records to keep the site secure and working. Your IP address is also used, for a short time, to limit misuse of the search suggestions.
If you email us, we keep your email address and your message so that we can reply and keep a record of what was asked.
Where business listings come from
Listings are built from publicly available business information: the business’s name, its trade or trades, the services it lists and the town or area it is based in. Where a business is run by a sole trader or a partnership, some of that is personal information about the people who run it.
We use this information to publish a directory of trades businesses. We rely on our legitimate interests, and those of people looking for a tradesperson, in being able to see which businesses work in an area.
If a listing is about you or your business, you can ask us to correct it or to remove it at any time by emailing support@builderfinderuk.co.uk. You do not have to give a reason for a removal.
How we use information
We use the information described above to run and improve the directory, to keep the site secure, to reply to people who write to us, and to meet our legal obligations. We rely on our legitimate interests in running the directory and, where it applies, on our legal obligations.
We do not sell personal information, and we do not use it for advertising.
Cookies
Builder Finder UK does not set cookies, and it has no analytics or advertising tools.
Service providers we use
- Hosting: the website and its database run on rented servers. Provider and location to be confirmed
- Fonts: our pages load fonts from Google Fonts, which receives your IP address and browser details when your browser fetches them.
- Maps: the map on a business’s page is loaded from OpenStreetMap, which receives your IP address and browser details when your browser fetches it. A “Directions” link opens Google Maps, and only when you choose it.
- Email: messages you send us are handled by our email provider. Provider to be confirmed
Information held outside the United Kingdom
Some of the service providers above may store and process information outside the United Kingdom. Where they do, we rely on the safeguards that UK data protection law allows. Once the providers are chosen, this section must list the countries involved. To be confirmed
How long we keep information
A listing stays in the directory until the business asks us to remove it or we find that it has closed. We keep server records and the emails people send us only for as long as we need them for the purposes above. Periods to be confirmed
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you have the right to ask us for a copy of the personal information we hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, to restrict how we use it, and to object to our using it. To use any of these rights, or to ask a question about this policy, email support@builderfinderuk.co.uk. We respond within one month.
This policy is governed by the UK General Data Protection Regulation and the Data Protection Act 2018. If you have a complaint about how we handle your personal information, you can contact the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.
